VFX artist &
visual storyteller.

I’m Marshal Michael Raj, a VFX artist and visual storyteller based in Chennai.

I’ve always been drawn to making images. Before I started thinking about VFX, I was interested in painting, colour, light, and the way a single image could create a feeling or tell a story. I studied Fine Arts, specialising in Painting, and that background still influences the way I approach VFX today.

For me, VFX isn’t just about making something look real. It’s about understanding why an image works, where the light should come from, how colours should sit together, how an environment should feel, and how all those little details come together to make you believe what you’re seeing.

I started my professional journey working in VFX as a Junior Compositor and 3D Generalist, where I got to work on real productions and learn what it actually takes to take an idea from a brief to a finished frame. Since then, I’ve worked across compositing, 3D, environments, lighting, rendering, and look development.

I’m constantly curious about new tools and ways of working. I’ve been exploring Houdini and procedural workflows, while continuing to push my skills in Blender and Nuke.

I’m still figuring out exactly where this journey will take me, and honestly, that’s one of the things I enjoy about it. I want to keep learning, make better images, work on bigger challenges, and eventually lead projects and teams while still being involved in the craft.

At the end of the day, I just like making things that weren’t there before.
